Inspiration

When I attended a children’s author’s critique meeting, a guest speaker gave each of us five minutes to write down a creative story line. I don’t know why, but I remembered that as a child, my father and I “cawed” at each other using a poor imitation of a crow’s call when we hiked through meadows and woods outside of Port Chester, New York. If we were a distance from each other, we’d use that call so we wouldn’t get separated. From that colorful memory came the idea for CAW ‘S FIRST HOLIDAY.

Inspiration

When I was a kid, our classrooms had old windows that could be lifted up for fresh air. When we had a big snow, we’d grab a handful of the white stuff that had collected on the sill and made snowballs in class, of course out of sight of the teacher. I’m sure that modern day Colorado schools no longer have windows of that style. I inserted this in the story for memories sake.
